It goes without saying that innovation is essential in sports venue construction, but there may be objective constrains to implementing new technologies. Sometimes it is the customer’s limited budget. The cost of sports facilities is relatively high, and the payback time may take decades. That explains the desire to cut down on the construction costs. Of course, in this scenario, durability, maintenance risk mitigation and reputation are out of question. However, it is not easy to talk the customers out of this choice.

The concept of frame tent and marquee structures was developed over 50 years ago in Canada and the USA. Up until recently, Russians were apprehensive towards this type of structures. Construction industry in Russia traditionally used a lot of brick and reinforced concrete, especially in the regions with extreme temperature variations (that is, on the larger part of the country). So, at first glance, frame tent and marquee structures do not look like a feasible solution for these conditions. 

Such wariness towards quick-mounting structures used to have its reasons. However, today the technology is more advanced, and can be used in all locations and for all purposes not just for sheds and storage buildings. As the industry moves forward, frame tent and marquee structures are used for sports venues and residential buildings.

Modern constructions can be used even in the Far North. Three-layer sandwich panels protect the houses from cold, and make them functional even at -60°С. A layer of green fiber, rockwool or 20cm of foamed polyurethane is identical to a 1-meter brick wall. And special membrane makes the wall breatheable while preserving the heat.

Modern structures can be used even in Far North with its severe climate. Triple wall sandwich panels protect buildings from low temperatures, even as extreme as -60°С. A 20 cm layer of green fiber, basalt fiber or polyurethane has the same properties as a brick wall. And the membrane film allows the building to ‘breath’ while saving the heat inside.


Light gauge steel framing has been growing fast in the recent years It is a real breakthrough. The thickness of the galvanized steel does not exceed 2mm, and the heat conductivity is lower due to perforation. The structure is light and sturdy, and can be paneled with a variety of materials.

‘Old schoolers’ often ask how the dew point issue is solved for such venue: the walls are neither made of concrete nor of brick. It is well known that as it gets colder outside, some moisture will be present in any building. If the building uses light gauge steel framing, the dew point is also inside the wall, and the issue of condensate is solved by external walls ventilation, and a number of other methods:

  • Vapor barrier wall insulation.

  • Insulating the frame.

  • Installing a water/wind resistant membrane layer that lets the vapor out of the insulation.

  • Designing an air gap between the vapor penetrable membrane and the outer paneling.

These features are essential for frame tent and marquee structures, as they are quite demanding in the terms of temperature conditions. This applies to gymnasiums, pools and ice rinks.


A great option for walls in regions with extreme temperature variations is the triple layer steel profile sheet panels. The sheets have a polymer protection layer and are installed with rock fiber or polyurethane insulation.

Polyurethane sandwich panels have low heat conductivity due to pentane filled polymer cells. Pentane is a gas with low heat conductivity, which significantly improves the property of insulation materials. Due to polyurethane’s low density, polyurethane sandwich panels weigh less than alternatives with rock fiber insulation. The weight difference is up to 25 tons per 1000 square meters. Lower weight means less requirements to load bearing capability of the structure and cheaper delivery of the materials to the building site.

Frame tent and marquee structures with polyurethane panels demonstrate great thermal isolation properties even if the outer layer is damaged. This type of insulation material does not absorb water, and prevents fungus growth on the inside of the building.

Of course, we cannot tell the story or even list all innovations in one article. However, even with a handful of key breakthroughs that Magnum uses, the construction process becomes much quicker and much cheaper.
